Sacred Space

JUNE 2020 | PRODUCER/CINEMATOGRAPHER/EDITOR

If you were there at the corner of 38th and Chicago in the wake of George Floyd’s murder on May 25, 2020, you already know what this is. Do you remember? The silence? The waves of people filtering in and out, not saying one word? It was chilling. But it was more than that. It was healing. It was beautiful in a way, with people of all races and backgrounds coming together to grieve as one. People put aside their differences and, for once, learn to love each other unconditionally. It may sound cursi, but I swear that’s what it was. Although that magic didn’t last very long (how could it?), it was there for those of us who needed it. So if you ever go back to 38th and Chicago to pay your respects, always remember that George Floyd was only one of many Black lives lost to police brutality, and even though things are “back to normal,” Black Lives Matter. We mustn’t stop fighting for the justice and peace they deserve.

Defund the Police Protest

JUNE 2020 | PRODUCER / CINEMATOGRAPHER / EDITOR

2020 was wild, it was caca for the most part, but honestly, this protest was one of the most beautiful things I experienced during the year and one of my fondest memories to date. It was a celebration of life and a call for change, loud and unapologetic. Well organized and well attended. Even Mayor Frey popped out of his building to say hello.

Free Oromia

JULY 2020 | PRODUCER / CINEMATOGRAPHER / EDITOR

One of the biggest lessons I learned from 2020 is that sometimes it can’t all be about you. Sometimes you must take yourself out of the equation and be in service to someone else because…I don’t know; I haven’t figured out that second part, but I’m guessing it’s because we’re all trying to be good people.

In the summer of 2020, some of my Oromian brothers talked to me about the situation in Oromia. Hachalu Hundessa, a leader in Oromia, was murdered in Ethiopia, the whole country went dark, and protests started happening in the States and worldwide. So I offered to film the demonstration and record Biftu Tula, a local Oromian activist and poet, as she performed this beautiful spoken word piece for her people.
